MAKE UP ASSIGNMENT

Please read the Definitions, Key Learning Points, “ABMP Code of Ethics” and “Drawing A Line—Defining Boundaries” on the following pages. When you have completed all reading, please answer the questions below. Turn in completed assignment to administrative staff within two weeks for recording.

  • Why are Massage Therapists not permitted to prescribe or diagnose?

  • Which component of the ABMP Professional Code of Ethics do you think is the most important? Why?

  • Explain the importance of verbal communication (what we say and how we say it) in the context of massage?

  • Explain the importance of non-verbal communication in the context of massage?

  • How would you deal with a “Controller” as discussed in the “Drawing A Line—Defining Boundaries” article, below.

  • Which of the Laws of Boundaries as discussed in the “Drawing A Line—Defining Boundaries” article, below do you think is the most important? Why?

  • Give an example of transference.

  • Give an example of countertransference.

  • Give an example of over-familiarity.
  • Read the following scenarios. Write an explanation of how you would react to each situation, and why you would respond this way.




    • A client asks you if you would like to meet for drinks after work.

    • You are doing a session on a client of the opposite sex. While doing a deep tissue stroke one of your hands is resting on the massage table, near your client’s hand. Your client puts his/ her hand on top of your hand and gently squeezes it.

    • A client is having a bad day and asks for a hug.
