Examples of policies to improve social participation and engagement

A high quality and inclusive built environment and transport system is critical to supporting active social participation in older people (see section on Age-Friendly Environments on page 16).

Community-based programmes and interventions that promote active social activity, for example day centres or volunteering programmes, increase social participation and decrease loneliness and depression (Hagan, Manktelow, Taylor, & Mallett, 2014).

Occupational therapy can support older adults with disability or functional impairments to maintain or improve their social participation (Berger, McAteer, Schreier, & Kaldenberg, 2010).
